Questions and answers about Food Neighbourhood and local food.
Why Food Neighbourhood?
Food Neighbourhood exists to connect those who produce food locally, with food buyers who want to eat locally produced food! Unfortunately, finding the local food you want can be far from easy, making a service like this pretty handy!
What is the meaning of "local food"?
There are lots of different definitions of local food, it's not exactly a standardized term. We look at it as food that's produced close enough to you that you can pick it up yourself. The actual distance may vary. A side of beef that will last you for months may be worth a couple of hours of driving, maybe more. Fresh veggies you likely want to find quite close to home. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide exactly how far "local" is to you.
What area does this Food Neighbourhood cover?
We've started out by adding producers in the Kawartha Lakes region. That roughly includes the City of Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada. Feel free to suggest producers who are not located in this area but are still close to you, and we'll sort it out. Food Neighbourhood is meant to grow naturally and be as useful as it possibly can. We're flexible.
How do you decide which food producers and sellers are included in Food Neighbourhood?
The main focus is on fresh food that is produced in the region: locally grown vegetables, fruits, herbs and grains, locally raised meat, local dairy and eggs. Of course, you should be able to find ALL of your food in this Food Neighbourhood, so there is room to improve and expand. Butchers, bakers, wineries, microbreweries, restaurants, and all other food-related businesses, groups and projects are also considered for listing, as long as they are in some clear way part of eating locally. And that's very much open to your suggestions!
Why should I register on foodneighbourhood.com?
Registration lets you use various Food Neighbourhood features, like instant messaging to connect with other members (right now, there are no features, but they're coming!). Signing up is quick, free, and respects your privacy by requiring a minimum of personal information—your email address—and keeping that info private.
